New Marvel Movies & Disney+ Projects in 2022: Release Dates and More

From Multiverses of Madness to Ms. Marvel and more, here's everything coming in Phase 4.

It might be hard to keep Marvel's upcoming movie and TV slate straight -- it's a lot to absorb, we know. But news of the next MCU movies and Disney+ TV series keeps coming, like She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, and Secret Invasion casting for starters. There's a ton happening (even a Marvel Zombies show is on the way!),

After laying dormant for over a year due to the pandemic, Marvel Studios came roaring back in 2021 with nine titles premiering in theaters and on Disney+. Among them were the firsbillion-dollar grossing movie of the pandemic, “Spider-Man: No Way Home”; Marvel Studios’ first ever animated series, “What If…?”; and Marvel Studios’ first ever Emmy nominees (and winners) “WandaVision” and “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.” The theatrical features “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “Eternals” introduced a cavalcade of new superheroes and new mythologies into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, while the Disney Plus series “Loki” cracked open the multiverse for the first time in the MCU, presaging all kinds of storytelling shenanigans. “Black Widow” and “Hawkeye,” meanwhile, debuted two new characters — Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh) and Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld) — who have taken on their respective heroic monikers from the OG Avengers who originated then.

Here are the most definite Phase 4 Marvel movies (and shows) that are currently in works:

CURRENTLY STREAMING ON DISNEY+

The series follows Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, who becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life. Steven discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc's enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt.

Moon Knight stars Oscar Isaac, Ethan Hawke and May Calamawy. Mohamed Diab and the team of Justin Benson & Aaron Moorhead directed the episodes. Jeremy Slater is the head writer, and Kevin Feige, Louis D'Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Brad Winderbaum, Mohamed Diab, Jeremy Slater and Oscar Isaac are the executive producers. Grant Curtis, Trevor Waterson and Rebecca Kirsch serve as co-executive producers.

The first full trailer for Moon Knight can be seen below:

MCU Tie-In: Still unclear, though its proximity to the May release of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” suggests some multiversal entanglements may be afoot.

CURRENTLY STREAMING IN THEATRES

The sequel to 2016’s standalone origin story for Stephen Strange, which will see star Benedict Cumberbatch return to the role after two small-but-crucial appearances elsewhere in the MCU during Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, has hit a rocky patch over at Marvel Studios in the past few weeks, with director Scott Derrickson departing the project over creative differences. That departure in itself should be noted when reading the following synopsis for Doctor Strange 2, which has popped up over at Production Weekly (via comicbook), a leading source for film and TV production data:

“After the events of Avengers: Endgame, Dr. Stephen Strange continues his research on the Time Stone. But an old friend turned enemy seeks to destroy every sorcerer on Earth, messing with Strange’s plan and also causing him to unleash an unspeakable evil.”

The full trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of madness can be seen below:

MCU Tie-In: Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch will carry over the events from “WandaVision.” And the first trailer for the movie strongly implies that Patrick Stewart will reprise is role as Charles Xavier from the “X-Men” franchise, though that has not been confirmed.

On Disney+ from June 8 2022

Marvel’s first Muslim lead character — and one of the newest characters within the Marvel Comics fold — gets her own Disney Plus show, with newcomer Iman Vellani in the title role, also known as 16-year-old Kamala Khan. A major fan of superheroes — especially Captain Marvel — Kamala gains the ability to change her shape and size, allowing her to, among other things, punch with a very, very big fist. Mohan Kapur, Rish Shah and Matt Lintz costar. Bisha K. Ali (Hulu’s “Four Weddings and a Funeral”) serves as executive producer and head writer.

After initially announcing “Ms. Marvel” would debut in late 2021, Marvel Studios pushed the series to June 2022 after so many shows and movies took over the calendar in 2021.

The full trailer for Ms Marvel can be seen below:

MCU Tie-In: Unclear for this show, but Vellani will appear in 2023’s “The Marvels” with Brie Larson (as Carol Danvers) and Teyonah Parris (as Monica Rambeau).

Taika Waititi is returning to direct the fourth “Thor” movie, which he’s co-written with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson (“Someone Great”), and he’s also reprising his motion-capture performance as Thor’s alien buddy Korg. Tessa Thompson is returning as Valkyrie, and after sitting out “Thor: Ragnarok,” Natalie Portman will return as Jane Foster, who will become the center of the story when she takes up Thor’s hammer and becomes the Mighty Thor. Jaimie Alexander, also last seen in “The Dark World” (and on “Loki”), is returning as Thor’s compatriot, Sif. Russell Crowe is playing the Greek god, Zeus. And the Dark Knight himself, Christian Bale, will play the villain, Gorr the God Butcher, whose main goal in life is pretty much right there in his name.

The full trailer for Thor : Love and Thunder can be seen below:

MCU Tie-In: Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord, last seen in “Endgame” bantering with Thor over who was in charge of the Guardians of the Galaxy, will appear in “Love and Thunder,” along fellow “Guardians” cast members Karen Gillan (Nebula), Pom Klementieff (Mantis), Dave Bautista (Drax), Rocket (voiced by Bradley Cooper) and Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel).

In Theaters

Feige has been clear that Marvel will not recast the role of T’Challa after the death of Chadwick Boseman. What is less clear is what that means for this franchise. Fan expectation is that T’Challa’s sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) would become leader of Wakanda and take on the duty of the Black Panther — but the only creative element of this film that’s been announced so far is its title, which at least makes clear Marvel’s commitment to this franchise.

The trailer for Wakanda Forever is yet to be released,

MCU Tie-In: Dominique Thorne (“Judas and the Black Messiah”) will originate the role of Riri Williams before she appears in the Disney Plus series “Ironheart.” Otherwise, unclear.

On Disney+

Tatiana Maslany will play Jennifer Walters, a lawyer whose field involves superhero-related cases. In the comics, Walters is cousins with Bruce Banner, and a blood transfusion from Banner gives her Hulk-ing abilities. Ginger Gonzaga, Renée Elise Goldsberry, Josh Segarra, and Jameela Jamil co-star. Jessica Gao (“Rick and Morty”) is the head writer, with Kat Coiro (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) and Anu Valia (“Never Have I Ever”) directing.

The full trailer for She HULK can be seen below:

MCU Tie-In: It’s not that surprising that Mark Ruffalo will return as Banner; it is quite surprising that Tim Roth will return as the Abomination, the villain from Marvel Studios’ not-terribly-well-regarded second film ever, 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” (and who also made an appearance in “Shang-Chi.”)

On Disney Plus

“Guardians” auteur James Gunn is writing and directing this special, which will shoot during production on “Guardians Vol. 3.” The story will feature the main cast and fill in the considerable storytelling gap between 2017’s “Guardians Vol. 2” and “Vol. 3.”

The trailer for Guardians of the galaxy Holiday Special is yet to be released,

MCU Tie-In: Unclear.

There are also several more titles in development, including a series set in the Kingdom of Wakanda and a feature film sequel to “Captain America” starring Anthony Mackie.

And after the debut of “What If…?”, multiple animated titles are on their way to Disney Plus, including Marvel Studios’ first swing at “X-Men” following Disney’s acquisition in 2019 of 20th Century Fox.

For Marvel chief creative officer Kevin Feige and his team of creative executives at Marvel Studios, the MCU’s post-“Avengers: Endgame” slate represents the most aggressive creative expansion of the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2012’s “The Avengers” re-defined what was possible with superhero storytelling.

Will be posting more news and more titles from MCU stay tuned.
